What's in a domain name?
|
Pages
that are too large and take too long to download.
If a page from your website takes more than a couple of seconds to display,
then it's too big. There is nothing worse than clicking on a web address
and waiting, waiting, waiting…
- Navigation (menus) that are confusing or inconsistent.
Few things are as frustrating and will turn off an audience faster than
a confusing navigation system.
- Absent or hidden contact details.
If you want visitors to buy something (either from your website or directly)
they will need an address, email and phone number as a minimum. These
should be easy to find, all in one place, on the ‘Contact Details’
page of your website. Generally, people don’t trust companies
without basic contact details included on their websites.
- Background Music.
The fastest way to get someone in an open-plan office, surfing the net
at lunchtime to leave your website is music! Other viewers also find
it extremely annoying.
- Flash Animation for the sake of it.
Do we really need that thing blinking all the time? It might be clever
the first time, but after that, it’s just annoying!
- Websites which don’t match a company’s other marketing
material.
A website might look great, but if it doesn’t match your business
card etc (uses a different colour scheme and style), it doesn’t
represent your business properly. All marketing material should present
a united image.
- Pages designed only for one screen resolution and/or browser.
Currently most users view websites with a screen resolution of 1024
x 768, but other resolutions are frequently used.
- Complicated or busy backgrounds that make text difficult to
read.
You do want people to read your website don’t you?
- Misspellings/typos/poor grammar.
These don’t add much credibility to your business.
- Centering everything on the page or typing all text in CAPS.
Both are very difficult to read.
