"Build
it and they will come" worked for Kevin Costner in 'Field of Dreams',
but it doesn't work for websites!
Some
website owners have a great looking new website, but don't understand
why it isn't making them any money. A common belief is:
"I thought when I put my website up on the Internet, everyone
would see it and business would just take off!"
If you build it, they won't come automatically.
A website can do a lot for your business, but you need to work at it.
Many people think that once a website goes live, the work is over. Actually,
that's when the work begins. If nobody knows your website exists,
it isn't going to bring in any new business.
People find new websites via the following 3 ways:
- Typing the address manually
- Links from other websites
- Search Engines
Make sure you cover all three of these bases to effectively market your
website.
Be Realistic
Your web designer should help you to understand some realities about
websites. It takes time to build up a web presence:
- If you haven't told anyone about your website, by including it on
your business cards and other offline
marketing techniques, nobody will know it's address to type it in
manually!
- Other websites will link to yours overtime, either by you requesting
links or if your content is relevant without your help.
- Website need to be submitted to major search engines. Typically these
days it only takes a couple of days to be listing in Google and other
search engines after submission. However, initially only one page may
be listed, then the search engine's spiders will return and "crawl"
through the other pages of your website - adding to the number of pages
indexed.
Even once your website's pages have been indexed the search engine rankings
for your site may move around quite a lot in the first few months.
Promote your website
You need to promote your website online and offline. A few ideas include:
- Make sure your website has been submitted to major free search engines
such as google. Talk to your web designer about paid inclusion or "pay-per-clicks"
programs.
- Launch your website properly - inform all your customers, suppliers
etc that you have a new website via email or some other means.
- Visit appropriate industry association websites and update your company's
listing to include a link to your website.
- Investigate internet directories appropriate to your location and
business type. Submit to any with free listings and consider paid listings.
Track your website's traffic
If you are spending money to advertise your business you should be measuring
how effective your online advertising dollar is. This involves tracking
the effect it is has on website traffic, sales, newsletter sign-ups etc.
