What's in a domain name?

Why
Link?
Links to your website from other websites provide two things:
- Additional opportunities for potential clients to find your website.
- More importantly, they help to increase your rankings in search engines
such as Google.
How do I get links to my website?
Contact:
- Relevant industry associations and update your on-line profile (if
available) to include your website.
- Suppliers/customers and request links where appropriate.
- People you know in complementary businesses to request links, for
example a bookkeeping company may contact several accountants who they
know refer clients to them or a marriage celebrant might want to contact
wedding photographers for links.
What next?
- Search using your favourite search engine for the websites of complimentary
businesses.
- If they have a links page, review it to see if your website would
be appropriate for inclusion.
- Email them requesting a link - offering a reciprocal link is usually
a good idea.
How can I find more websites to link to my website?
- Look at where other websites are getting links from
(such as your competitors). For instructions see: Search
Engine Tips & Tricks.
- A Link Exchange Form: The best way to get links
is to have people do it for you. Get your web designer to set up a form
on your website where you can ask people to fill in their website's
details, and link to you. The form emails their details to you, then
you check that they've linked to your website, and then add them to
the appropriate links section of your website.
What do I say when requesting a link from another website?
- If you can, find out the name of the person responsible for the website.
If you can't find out, use "Dear Sir/Madam".
- Start by being complimentary, and telling them how you found out about
their company and website.
- Introduce yourself. Give your name, and a title (even if you are a
one-man-band). Ask politely. Don't say "my website" - you
want to give the impression that your website is a commercial enterprise,
not your home business.
- Give some information about your website's traffic. 2000 visitors
a month is better put as "thousands". This is the bit that
will really interest them.
- Make your signature look professional.
An example email is shown below:
Dear Mr Smith,
I found your company after a recent customer gave a glowing recommendation
of your services and have been similarly impressed by your company's
website.
I'm Fred Nerks, Administrator of Abacus Design (www.abacusdesign.com.au).
I would like to submit Abacus Design's website for consideration
in the links area of your company's website. The services offered
by Abacus Design are complementary to those offered by your company
and thus could be of benefit to your customers.
Abacus Design is visited by thousands of prospective customers each
month. I could certainly direct many of those visitors to your website
via a reciprocal link.
Thank you for your time.
Yours Sincerely,
Fred Nerks
