Understanding Website StatisticsWhat's in a domain name?

All website owner want to increase traffic sent via the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN). And why not? It's free and the visitors are targeted to your products and/or services. The problem with achieving this is that you need to understand the ranking methods (or algorithms) used by each of the search engines.

The huge variety of choices when it comes to opinions and "experts" on how to increase search engine rankings is confusing. Also remember that regardless of what the “experts” tell you, they're all guessing. The search engines don't actually reveal how their algorithms calculate the rankings.

All of the major Search Engines use a slightly different method to calculate a website's ranking for specific keywords. Whenever someone thinks they have worked out one of the factors used in determining search engine rankings for a particular engine they post it everywhere on the internet. Then that facet is exploited and the search engines subsequently abandon the method. As soon as search engines see that someone can work out their system, they change it.

That's one of the main reasons the search engines regularly change their ranking algorithms. Since huge revenues are up for grabs, i.e. sales of products and/or services for the website owners, any advantage is considerable.

However, there is one constant factor in search engine rankings that hasn’t changed in these algorithms – website content! Website owners who have concentrated on providing meaningful content have not noticed a significant impact when algorithm changes are implemented by the search engines.

The best way to increase your search engine rankings for a particular keyword or phrase is to provide meaningful content based on that keyword. Here a few guidelines:

  • Focus on the subject matter (don't target too many keywords with one page).
  • Be specific and provide details – don't generalise and be descriptive.
  • Use benefits and features to fully describe the product and/or service and how it will help the visitor.
  • Update your information regularly.
