If you do not have the right domain name, you may not get enough website traffic and therefore your website wont generate the sales you need. Think about the following things to make sure customers can easily find your website and/or simply select it from the search engine list. The principle is KISS! 1. Easy to Remember The most important thing when selecting a domain name is to make it easy to remember. You want customers to type it into the address bar without thinking. Is it easier to type in www.ebay.com.au or www.buythingsonline.com.au? If your domain name is easy to remember, people will simply type it in instead of going to a search engine and having the possibility of going to one of your competitor’s websites. 2. Keep it short www.ebay.com.au is also short, which makes it easy to remember. If you make your domain too long, people may mistype it and end up in a search engines to find it. If find you at the top of the search engine listing you will probably still get their business, but they still have the opportunity of visiting your competitor’s websites. 3. Easy to spell Again, if someone can’t spell your website’s name they may end up in a search engines to find it. This leaves them frustrated and possibly at your competitor’s website.
One option is having a domain name that reflects products or services provided by your business. It can be a good way to help people remember it, for example www.onlinelighting.com.au is owned by an Australian lighting retailer. This can be useful if you don’t have strong branding like some of the big companies for example “ANZ” or “Rebel Sports” etc. It also helps somewhat with search engine rankings for people searching for terms related to your business e.g. someone searching for the keywords “online lighting”. However, many canny business owners have already snapped up business related domain names in various industries, so an appropriate business related domain name in your field may no longer be available. 5. Branding The other alternative to relating your domain name to your business’s products and/or services is one that reflects your business name or brand. This generally means you will need to put more effort into the branding, such as always including the domain name in all offline marketing material. Successful branding can be more difficult for small businesses. You need to find a way to make yours get noticed. The upshot is that if you want people to go directly to your website,
you need to make it easy for them. Remember the principle KISS
