.com
and .net
The .com and .net domain extensions are accessible to anyone, without
restrictions. They are widely recognised internationally and are usually
associated with international or American companies.
.org
The .org domain name extension is intended for charities and non-profit
organisations.
.com.au
Most countries have a matching top-level domain name, under which domains
are sold, such as .com.au, .net.au and
.org.au. com.au is the most frequently
used domain name extension for Australian businesses. About 80% of Australian
domain names end in .com.au. It is the recommended first
choice for businesses with a primarily Australian customer base.
Requirements for .com.au domains:
- You need an ABN (Australian Business Number), ACN (Australian Company
Number), BRN (state-based business registration number) or incorporation
number to apply (i.e. you need to be an Australian company, registered
business name or association).
- Multiple .au domain names are now allowed, so you
can have as many .com.au domains as you like, provided
of course that each one meets the policy requirements.
- The .com.au domain name(s) you register can be either
an exact match of your business name or else a close abbreviation or
acronym. In addition, you can register a domain name that relates to
a product or service you provide, your profession, an event you run
or sponsor, something you teach or train people in, a trademark you
own, or an event you run.
- .com.au domain names cannot be an exact match of
an Australian place name.
Alternative domain extensions
.id.au
The .id.au domain extension is for individuals who are
Australian citizens or residents.
.asn.au
The .asn.au domain extension is for incorporated associations,
political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs.
